Between my busy work schedule, active social life, and demanding personal obligations, I am constantly tied to my phone — and I’m embarrassed to admit, even while I’m behind the wheel.
Sure, there have always been distractions while driving (noisy kids in the back seat, unexpected pedestrians, and wild drivers) but nowadays, there are even more distractions vying to peel our attention away from the road.
Although I know phone use while driving is a potentially deadly duo, it’s been a hard pair for me to say goodbye to. But what many of us don’t realize, is that what we think is just an innocent second responding to a text, can have dire consequences. And I know, I am definitely part of this global problem.
But despite all the anti-texting while driving campaigns and social efforts to get people to put away their phones behind the wheel, we all know the power the cell phone has over us! That Facebook notification you just need to quickly check, the ding of an Instagram like, or the whistle of an incoming text from your group chat, are sometimes urges that we find too hard to overcome.
The American National Safety Council reports that cell phone use, while driving is responsible for 1.6 million car, crashes each year, with around 330,000 injuries reported due to accidents involving texting while driving. One out of every 4 car accidents in the US are caused by texting and driving. Now if those facts don’t startle you, you are way braver than I am!

“So I decided, if I was going to use technology that could potentially harm me, I was also going to have a technology that could help protect me.“
With my young family frequently in the car with me, becoming distracted while driving was no longer an option. But even if I no longer reached for my phone, another big concern was all the other drivers on the road who had similar phone usage habits while behind the wheel. With such frightening figures involving texting, I did not want to become another statistic. So I began asking around for suggestions that could help protect me and my family while on the road.
Some suggested that I use the ‘do not disturb’ function on my phone while driving. But frankly, I found this super unrealistic and pretty annoying! Others thought it might be a good idea for me to turn my cellphone totally off while behind the wheel and place it out of reach in the back seat. Again, another unrealistic suggestion I was none too fond of.
Finally, I got an answer that suited my needs. A technology that I had never even heard of before, but all familiar with it swore would calm my nerves and help keep me safe behind the wheel! So I decided, if I was going to use technology that could potentially harm me while on the road, I was also going to have a technology that could help protect me.
Although this technology sounded like just what I needed, I was hesitant and definitely had a few reservations. Would I have to get a new car or go through some overly complicated installation process? Thankfully, the answers were no and no!
SDS technology is a super easy to install display unit, which uses cutting-edge radar and camera tech to constantly scan and monitor the road around me, making sure I’m always a safe distance from cars in front of me. SDS quickly became my second pair of eyes and ears on the road.
